It’s no secret that I am a bit nostalgic when it comes to my gear. I appreciate all the new, high-speed equipment available these days. However, some of my most prized gear was acquired on my trail to becoming an Eagle Scout & in the Marines. A good percentage of the gear that I carry today comes from the good ‘ole days.. I tested the gear back then & kept what worked. So maybe my nostalgia has to do more with experience than it does with feelings. – I’m sure it’s a bit of both.
One of the pieces that is carry-over from my boy scout days is my Stansport Stainless Steel Mess Kit. This type of mess kit was standard for every boy scout that I knew during my scouting career. They were sold at the same locations where we bought our uniforms & even the red carrying pouch had the BSA logo on it. The mess kit is lightweight, weighing in just over 1lb. It is also made of stainless steel which is great! Back in the day, many mess kits were made of Aluminum. With all the latest clinical studies teaching us that Aluminum & other cooking gear materials can wreak havoc on our nervous system.. – Let’s all just keep away from Aluminum when it comes to cooking.
Stainless steel is also much easier to clean than Aluminum. In my video review below, I show you an easy trick using Biodegradable Camp Soap to keep your mess kit looking brand new no matter how much time it spends over the fire. Another great feature of this mess kit.. it is easy on the wallet at under $20 shipped.
